The House on First Street: My New Orleans Story by Julia Reed
This book is about the house across the street from the Brevard-Rice house. It's been several years since I read it, but I remember I liked it a lot. It even discusses the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Click on the link below to purchase on Amazon.com:
Want
to read more about the blending of humans with other beings?
I have taken the time to put a short
list of books together that I've read (or plan to read) and which I
found excellent
in terms of being
entertained. There are a variety of supernatural beings in these books
but what appeals
to me most about them is that they
are about everyday people having extraordinary experiences. They are
fun reads and
really beg the question of how
we are to blend the material world with the spiritual.
Anne
Rice's own literary inspirations for what appears in the Mayfair books
appear elsewhere on this site. This
is really a contemporary list of what has been inspired by the work of
Anne Rice
and Dracula by Bram Stoker (a must-read for anyone
interested in vampire lore and Victorian England).
Sooo...
If you are interested in what can be described as following the tradition of the classic New England ghost story, here is a book I read several years ago that the author self published in 2005 called The Legend of Diadamia.
It is a sequel to the first book, Afterimages, also set in Rhode Island. Unfortunately, I'm not able to find Afterimages available anywhere at this time. That is a real shame, since the author, who has a real knack for historical research, wrote and published a fascinating tale worth reading more than once.
The Legend of Diadamia also draws some inspiration from something else Rhode Island is famous for: vampires. Although this novel is not about vampires, it does draw inspiration in ways from the tale of Mercy Brown, the young woman at the center of a strange tale that is said to have been an inspiration for the novel, Dracula.
The book can be purchased in print or ebook form from Authorhouse: The Legend of Diadamia by C.J. Fisher
